What is rebound (reb) in basketball?
A rebound is credited to the player who gains possession of the ball after a missed field goal or free throw.
REB = OREB + DREB
How rebound is recorded
Rebounds are split into offensive rebounds (your team missed) and defensive rebounds (the other team missed). Total rebounds are the sum of both.
Worked example from a box score
A line reading 3 OREB and 6 DREB is 9 total rebounds, with a third of them creating extra possessions for their own team.
What a good rebound looks like at youth level
For a youth guard, 4–6 rebounds a game is strong. For a post player, 8+ is the mark of someone controlling their area of the floor.
Why it matters for a youth athlete
Rebounding is the clearest effort stat in youth basketball. Offensive rebounds in particular show a player who keeps competing after the shot goes up, which coaches notice long before scoring develops.
