What is block (blk) in basketball?
A block is credited when a defender legally deflects a field goal attempt on its way to the basket, preventing the shot from scoring.
How block is recorded
Recorded on the defender. The shooter is still charged with a missed field goal attempt, and the rebound goes to whichever team recovers the loose ball.
Worked example from a box score
A post player with 2 BLK and 7 DREB is protecting the rim and finishing the possession — the pairing matters more than the blocks alone.
What a good block looks like at youth level
One block a game is meaningful at youth level; two or more from an interior player is a real rim-protection presence.
Why it matters for a youth athlete
Blocks show rim protection and timing. Blocks kept in bounds and turned into possession are worth far more than the highlight-reel swat into the third row.
