What is field goal percentage (fg%) in basketball?
Field goal percentage is the share of a player's shot attempts from the floor that go in, excluding free throws.
FG% = Field Goals Made / Field Goals Attempted
How field goal percentage is recorded
Made field goals divided by attempted field goals. Both two-point and three-point attempts count, which is why it undervalues three-point shooters.
Worked example from a box score
A line of 6-13 FG is 46.2% — six makes divided by thirteen attempts.
What a good field goal percentage looks like at youth level
Around 45% is a good youth benchmark for a guard and 50%+ for a player taking most shots near the rim. Perimeter-heavy shooters sit lower and should be judged on eFG% instead.
Why it matters for a youth athlete
It is the simplest read on shot quality and selection. A guard shooting 35% and a post shooting 35% are telling very different stories about where those shots come from.
