What is three-point percentage (3p%) in basketball?
Three-point percentage is the share of a player's attempts from behind the three-point arc that are made.
3P% = Three-Pointers Made / Three-Pointers Attempted
How three-point percentage is recorded
Three-pointers made divided by three-pointers attempted. Every three-point attempt is also counted inside total field goal attempts.
Worked example from a box score
A player at 2-6 from three shot 33.3% that night; across a season of 30-95, they are a 31.6% shooter.
What a good three-point percentage looks like at youth level
Anything at or above 33% is useful at youth level, and 36%+ makes a player someone defences have to close out on. Use at least 40–50 attempts before trusting the number.
Why it matters for a youth athlete
Small youth samples swing this number wildly — two makes in a game can move a season average several points. Judge it over a full season, not a weekend tournament.
