What is assist-to-turnover ratio (a/to) in basketball?
Assist-to-turnover ratio measures how many assists a player records for every turnover they commit.
A/TO = Assists / Turnovers
How assist-to-turnover ratio is recorded
Total assists divided by total turnovers over the period being measured. A ratio above 2.0 is strong for a youth guard; below 1.0 signals the ball is being lost more than it is being distributed.
Worked example from a box score
A season of 84 assists and 38 turnovers is a 2.2 A/TO — a guard the coach trusts against pressure.
What a good assist-to-turnover ratio looks like at youth level
1.5 is respectable for a youth point guard, 2.0+ is strong, and below 1.0 means the offence is losing more possessions than it is creating.
Why it matters for a youth athlete
This is the number that best describes a point guard's game in one figure, and it is the one that travels furthest when coaches evaluate an athlete they have not watched.
