How to choose a youth sports video platform

Ask who pays to watch

The single biggest cost difference is whether families need their own subscription to watch their own athlete. On some platforms the program pays and families watch free; on others the program pays and families still hit a paywall on game day.

Get this answered in writing before the season, because it is the cost that surprises parents and it lands on the coach who chose the platform.

• Is live viewing free for every parent on the roster?
• Is the saved recording free to watch after the game?
• Is there a separate fee to download or export a clip?

Test the setup with the equipment you actually have

Most youth programs are streaming from a phone on a tripod, on gym wi-fi, run by whoever showed up. If a platform needs a dedicated camera, a laptop, or a volunteer trained on an operator console, it will be abandoned by January.

Run one real game as a trial. A demo in an empty gym proves nothing about a platform's behaviour on a saturated network at a tournament.

Check what happens to the footage when you leave

Ask directly: if the program does not renew, can families still access the games they appeared in, and can they download them? Video of a childhood is a keepsake, not a subscription feature, and platforms differ sharply here.

Also ask whether stats export. A season of box scores that only exists inside a vendor's app is not a record an athlete can take to a coach later.

• Access for families after the program stops paying.

Separate stats from video, then judge both

A platform can stream well and keep stats badly, or the reverse. If verified season stats matter to you — and they do for anyone thinking about recruiting — check that stats attach to the athlete's profile rather than living per-game, and that they can be tied back to the footage that produced them.

Price the whole season, not the sticker

Add up the program fee, the per-family fee, per-clip charges, storage limits after the season, and anything gated behind a higher tier. Then divide by games played. That number, not the monthly price, is what you are comparing.
